Birth of a Showroom-Peak at Home
So, a year ago next month, Richard Peak buys a building in the Historic West Bottoms in Kansas City, Kansas. Phone rings. “Trish, I bought a building today” I reply “Great Richard, what are you going to do with the building?” Richard says, “Oh, it’s not what I’m going to do with it, but rather what you are going to do with it.” I say “Oh, what am I going to do with a building in Kansas City?” to which Richard replies, “Turn it into a showroom.”
I’m a mother of two beautiful daughters. I carried them for 9 months, taking vitamins, resting, eating right and daydreaming of what life would be like with this new baby to focus on in my life. Birthing a store is far more laborious. First off, sleep is non-existent, eating consists of fast food and high fat content, and daydreams are traded for nightmares. Unlike a baby that is sure to arrive in 9 months…a store will be born when it’s ready, not on yours’ or your contractor’s time table.
For 11 months, I knew nothing other than this showroom. I’m a person that visualizes everything. From my first concept I can see the finished product, not the process to the finish line. When the finished product is trapped in your head and your head alone, it is often times hard to convey that same image to those around you. For the person that wants to know the process to the finish line and works that way (aka general contractor) well then, someone like me can be a real thorn in their side. I am also a passionate person and passion can sometimes be mistaken for anger.
Bottom line is that the Peak at Home showroom is now open! It has been a labor of love and sacrifice. Not just from me, but many other people, to bring this dream a reality. The finished product turned out far better than the picture I had trapped in my head.
Every morning when I turn the lights on…I get a burst of pride.
