Where Do You Find Your Inspiration?
Spring is in the air and we are all venturing out of winter hibernation. First nice sunny day and we throw open the windows to the crisp air, to discover the windows really need replaced. A sunny day throws a cast across a room that now looks dull and could use a fresh coat of paint. Moving those bulking winter clothes out of the closet to be replaced by our 'fun' clothes, leaves us wishing we had organized closets.
I obviously get an abundance of trade publications about kitchen and bath remodeling, including: appliances, tiling, flooring, lighting and new trends. I find it interesting that the publications all have a forecast of the future of the interior remodeling projects, yet, most customers are much easier to please. Just like a fashion magazine...we may like the outfit on the model, yet we are also smart enough consumers to know we cannot afford to shop at that store providing the $1000 shoes, that match the custom made dress. Then there is the small details, that I'm not the size of the model pictured and I don't look good in bright red. These magazines on home remodeling, television shows like HGTV and maybe even your neighbors 'the Jones's' make a simple change in your home environment appear expensive and overwhelming. Same principal as the fashion magazines...where do I start or do I just give up now?
Find your inspiration! What makes your soul awaken and brings a smile to your face? Maybe you really like the color periwinkle blue and would love a room covered in all things periwinkle, but know that would give the neighbors reason to question your good senses. So, paint one wall in the room periwinkle blue and add some highlights, such as: throw pillows, a vase or some new window coverings. You'll feel alive and love your 'new' space on little money.
For those new windows: look up building material auctions in your area for a great selection of premium windows at great prices. I recommend Peak Building Material Auctions, you can visit the website to get the schedule of when they will be in a town near you. (www.peakauction.com) If that is not an option for you, check out your local ReStore for Habitat for Humanity Store, another great resources for building materials at great prices. (www.restore.org)
I personally find inspiration from things around me. I always do the things that have to be done first. You know the things that require more time, effort and money, but allow the value of my home to increase. Then I do the fun stuff to make my environment happy. Right now I'm finding my inspiration in the sun that has hidden all winter and the colorful flowers starting to break through the ground. I'm off to the store for a gallon of butter yellow paint to bring some sunshine into my space and some bright colorful tile to redo a table top.
Happy Decorating, Remodeling and Replacing this spring!
